North London Cares and South London Cares are community networks of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out and helping one another in a rapidly changing city. Through regular social clubs including film nights, cooking groups, dance parties and new tech classes, as well as through one-to-one friendships and winter outreach projects, young and older neighbours share time, laughter and new experiences. The charities are shown to reduce the growing and heartbreaking curse of loneliness and isolation amongst older people (and younger people too), to improve the confidence, wellbeing, resilience and connection of all participants and to bring people together across social and generational divides so that no one feels left behind by the rapid pace of change in our capital.
Just for Kids Law (charity no. 1121638) delivers direct holistic support and representation to vulnerable children and young people in London, taking them from crisis to stability into independence. We provide each young person with a youth advocate backed up by a team of lawyers who specialise in education, community care, immigration and youth justice. We bring about broader social change to the way vulnerable children and young people are treated. PeacePlayers International uses basketball to unite, educate and inspire young people to create a more peaceful world. Based on the premise that children who play together can learn to live together, we implement consistent, year-round sports activities that bring together children from opposite sides of religious, ethnic and cultural divides. By offering long-term, equitable basketball programming, peace education, leadership and professional training, PPI challenges the status quo of hatred and fear that grip these societies, making cross-community cooperation desirable, and giving young people practical skills to deal with conflict and grow into ambassadors for peace in their communities. Explains Ali, a PPI participant in Jerusalem, “Now I have friends who I never thought I would be friends with, people I can go out with outside of the court… and it doesn’t matter what’s his religion, where he’s from, what’s his culture, what he thinks.”
